FAQ
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is odorless, colorless, and tasteless. It is also chemically inert, meaning that the only way to determine how much radon is in a space is by radon testing and mitigation. Radon occurs when the breakdown of the uranium that exists in the soil and rocks gets into the air you breathe. Radon can be found in homes, offices, and schools as it can easily pass through most building materials like insulation and sheetrock.
Because radon is a radioactive gas, high levels can cause significant health issues, especially with continued exposure. According to the EPA, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, just behind smoking. Even if a person does not smoke, they have an increased risk of developing lung cancer if there are high levels of radon in their homes. Increased radon levels in water may also cause an increased risk of developing stomach cancer. Children are also at an increased risk of becoming sick through exposure to radon.
While the EPA states that any radon exposure carries some risk, there is a level that is deemed acceptable for long-term exposure. The EPA recommends that homes with a radon testing and mitigation result of 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) or higher should be fixed to reduce the level of exposure. Since radon cannot be detected through sight, smell, or taste, radon testing and mitigation is the only way to determine if radon is in your home or business. While there are home testing kits that are available for purchase, the best option for radon testing and mitigation is to hire a certified radon testing and mitigation company, like Sunbelt Environmental Services.
